In July 2010 Orchid was delighted to hear of the creation of UN Women. It is a new agency that will build on the existing work of four parts of the UN system currently focusing on gender equality and women’s empowerment. UN Women will begin work from January 2011, and Michelle Bachelet, former president of Chile, was appointed Under-Secretary-General in September. She said: ‘UN Women will significantly boost UN efforts to expand opportunities for women and girls and tackle discrimination around the globe.’
We hope that this new agency will mean a more joined-up approach is taken towards tackling FGC, and we intend to lobby UN Women towards making FGC a priority issue.
